Biographical: He had just crossed the finish line on his second qualifying pass, timed at 217 MPH, when his boat hit a small wave. It tipped to the left, started tumbling sideways, rolled sideways, then splintered into several pieces. His capsule shot about thirty feet into the air, but came down upside down and backwards. The water penetrated into the capsule, blowing the windshield out from the inside. He was rushed to a nearby hospital, but was dead on arrival. He was from Allegan, Michigan and was survived by his wife, Deanna, and two sons. He'd been racing boats for 32 years and was inducted into the Michigan Motor Sports Hall of Fame in 2010. Several times he was world champion in top fuel hydro and a holder of national records in both speed and time.

Reportedly the driveline on his boat broke, making the bow drop under water at speed. He was from Phoenix and was survived by his wife, Holly, and their three children.
